Joshua’s Song
By Joan Hiatt Harlow
Have you ever heard of molasses flooding a city? An influenza epidemic
killing thousands? This story includes these events that took place in
Boston 1919. Young Joshua had a great life. He sang in the choir,
he lived in a wonderful home, that was until the influenza epidemic where
it changed everything. After his father died Joshua had to find a
job, he moved to a different house with his mother and took in boarders.
The only job Joshua could find was selling papers for a tough boy of the
streets, Charleston Charlie.
After some time Joshua buys his own papers and sells them. The only dilemma: Charleston Charlie. Getting beat up was not something anyone would want to happen, especially when you pass him by every day. When the molasses tank blows by the tenements, flooding the city, can Charlie and Joshua work together to save a friend. |
