Written by Esther Forbes

Johnny Tremain is a story about a boy becoming a man, at a time when America was becoming a nation.  This story tells the interesting tale of how Johnny changes as he sees the land of his birth change from English controlled to democratic.  Johnny's Boston is exciting and revolutionary, and Johnny is an eyewitness to the Boston Tea Party and other important events of America's fight for independence.  In the beginning of the story, Johnny is living in Boston as a young, 16 year old,  inexperienced silversmith apprentice.  As America's revolution develops, so does Johnny's view of life.  His experiences are as exciting now as they were over 200 years ago, so  reading Johnny Tremain makes you feel like a witness to the battles and struggles that made America free.
