Summary
This book, ÒA Line in
the SandÓ, is about a young thirteen-year-old Texan girl by the name of
Lucinda Lawrence. She lived in Gonzales, Texas with her mother, father, and three
brothers, Willis, Lemuel, and Green. Her very best friendÕs name was Mittie
Roe. During
part of LucindaÕs life, Texas was in war with Mexico, to gain their freedom
and independence. Her brother Willis, and uncle were both in this war.
However, LucindaÕs father was not in the war. This is because he had a
wounded leg, from being trampled by a scared ox. Lucinda
cooked, picked cotton, pecans, nuts, and other foods for her family. She also
cleaned, gathered hen eggs, brushed her motherÕs hair, and other chores. Lucinda
Lawrence had really grown to miss her brother Willis, and soon after, her
brother Lemuel, when he, too, went off to fight in the war, but was captured
by cruel, selfish. people on his way. Then,
Lucinda and her family went to visit her motherÕs brother and sister-in-law,
who were soon to be parents of a baby boy. Finally, when the LawrenceÕs
reached their familyÕs house, the baby boy had already been born! He was
named after George Washington. Finally,
the Lawrence family went home, and reunited with Lemuel and found out about
Willis and LucindaÕs uncleÕs death. They were extremely happy to be once
again with Lemuel, but devastated about the two deaths. The
LawrenceÕs were told that Texas had finally gained their freedom and
independence, and were overjoyed and exceedingly happy about that! |

In my opinion, I
thought this book was fairly good. I liked the fact the main character in this
book was a girl my age, so I could relate to her on some things. I enjoyed
reading about the olden days and what people went through and did back then.
I also enjoyed reading about what Lucinda and her family wore, ate, did on
special occasions and holiday, and what they did on a daily occurrence. This
book is also about fairly good, because it might be fun comparing our
lifestyles now, to their lifestyles back then, Some
intriguing and interesting examples from the story, would be, ÒLand OÕ
Goshen! The battle is on!Ó and ÒWe were awakened by the most awful shriek.
Nothing can describe it. Then came the pop, pop, pop of the rifles in the
distance. Papa says the scream is the old six- pounder cannon. Lord
Almighty!Ó |
