The book I read, The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins, teaches people what had gone on during World War II. The book also tells the readers what are the benefits of being in the military and what are the disadvantages of being in the army. Also the book tells the reader about the lifestyles of the army men. I hope all my readers enjoy my webpage! |

For Scott Collins, was a family
tradition. His great grandfather fought in the civil war, and his father
fought in World War I. They are heroes to ScottÕs family and Scott wants to
be just like them with his picture displayed, in uniform, alongside theirs on
the living room wall. When Scott joins the army, he and his fellow soldiers
have dreams of marching into Germany and freeing the world from the evil
plans of Adolf Hitler. He soon finds that being a soldier isnÕt quite as
glorious as he had envisioned. From the time Scott and his company hit Omaha beach in Normandy, France, the casualties are heavy. With men wounded and dying all around him, Scott turns to his journal to express the emotions and fears he is feeling. He had never seen war up close, staring death right in the face. Far from the comforts of home, the fight against the Nazis becomes a cold, muddy, life-threatening struggle to reach the next foxhole, the next town, the next frontline. |

CHARACTERS
& SETTING
This story took place throughout
Europe. Winston Churchill was a surprising man because he made
history and also wrote it by being an artist and author. He led the British
to victory in World War II yet still managed to win the Nobel Peace Prize for
writing The History of the Second World War. Tojo
Hideki was born in
Tokyo on December 30, 1884. He was the son of an army general and followed in
his fatherÕs footsteps as he chooses a life in the military. He graduated
from the Japanese Military Academy in 1905 and completed his studies at the
army war college with honors ten years later.
Adolf Hitler was born April, 20, 1880 in Braunau, Austria. Hitler failed to get into the academy in 1907 and 1908, which made him go into depression and denial. He wandered the streets and lived off painting and selling postcards. In May 1913 in an attempt to stay out of the Austrian army he went to Munich, Germany where he was arrested. He was not convicted. Then he went to Munich as he enrolled in the German Army and fought in World War I on the Western German front. He never reached a rank higher than corporal, and he was also injured two times. He won several bravery awards but won the Iron Cross First Class. |

In 1994, Walter Dean Myers received
the MAE award. The committee cited his novels: Hoops, Fallen Angels,
Scorpions, and Motown
and Didi.
Myers was born in Martinsburg, West
Virginia. When he was three, his mother died, and he went to live in Harlem,
New York with the Deans. In those years, Myers say that Harlem Òwas a place
affirmation. The excitement of city living exploded in the teeming streets. He was a good student, but he wasnÕt
able to go to college. So, at seventeen, he joined the army- always reading
and always writing stories. Eventually, he went to college, found a job in
publishing, and began to write stories for young adults. |

REVIEW It was a great book to read for a
personal view about World War II. It was great book for a personal view
because Scott Collins describes very distinctly how the war looked, what were
the dangers, who was his captains and lieutenant, and who was helping the
Germans. |
