Introduction

If you want daring, exciting, scary, happy, and sad adventures then you must read this book.  I highly recommend it.  Did you ever wonder what it was like to be controlled by the communists?  Well, if you read this book, you will know how the evil communists treat people and why people would run away from them.

Summary:

This story is about the escape from Hungary when it was under the control of the evil communists and their soviet masters by a thirteen-year old boy, Laszlo Kerek.  This boy had lived with his grandmother when his parents had been able to get permission to immigrate to Sweden.  The grandmother had died and now the communists wanted to put Laszlo in an orphanage that doubles as a reform and re-education school.  On the train to Szlnok, Hungary, Laszlo is paired with Pishta, who is being sent to the same school for re-education.  Pishta engineers their escape and the rest of the story is about how the pair is able to escape Hungary to Vienna, Austria, Laszlo is able to reunite with his parents.  Mr. and Mrs. Veres are a kindly couple that is neighbors of Pishta and his widowed mother.  PishtaÕs father had been killed during the war.  Mr. and Mrs. Veres arranges for them to be stowaways on a train bound to Vienna.  Pishta catches pneumonia on the train and Laszlo gets left behind at a train stop near Hungarian border when he gets water for his sick traveling companion.  They both make it to Vienna where Pishta is hospitalized and Laszlo falls into the clutches of the criminal who holds Laszlo for ransom.  LaszloÕs father is able to get a friend of his, Bo Nillson, to get to Austria to reclaim his son.  Bo is able to track down Laszlo, get Herr Kliener arrested and return Laszlo to his parents.  The story ends with Laszlo boarding a plan to Sweden.
