The
Republic
The sixth grade homeroom theme is THE
REPUBLIC.
The Republic is a game designed to engage students in
self-governance. In the game, students interpret and
recreate certain aspects of American society. The objectives
of the game are to develop public and private institutions
based on the principles of democracy, fair play, capitalism,
due process, and to encourage group cooperation. Students
create a government, private businesses, and banking
systems within the classroom. The student government
and businesses provide necessary commodities and services,
such as the distribution of paper, pencils, Kleenex,
glue, and scissors. The teacher acts as the “Benevolent
Lord Protector” of individual rights and facilitates
democracy, fair play, capitalism, and due-process among
the students as their institutions evolve. The game
includes an incentive system and currency called Bolden
Bucks. Players earn Bolden Bucks and can redeem them
at the classroom store.
