Music education in the lower grades, 1 through 4, includes the study of rhythm, melody, and music reading skills, as well as singing traditional songs of our American culture. The use of Recorder playing in grades 2 through 4 will help enhance these music performance skills.
In the upper grades, 5 through 8, students will expand their knowledge of the multi-faceted aspects of music from various cultures, centuries, and styles. Subjects to be covered will include: folk songs, religious music, symphony, opera, ballet, jazz, American and European composers, and some contemporary music. The 7th and 8th grade classes are also asked to write research papers and make presentations in class regarding the life and work of various composers and/or contemporary styles of music.
